A concise guide to storage access, Home, Spaces, browsing, search, file operations, Trash, and settings in treeger.

This guide describes the main workflows in the current treeger application without documenting every control or Android system dialog.

Grant storage access

treeger needs storage access to work as a general file manager. On Android 11 and newer, the app asks you to allow all-files access in Android settings. Older supported Android versions use the platform’s external-storage read permission.

The app can also read compatible Android document-provider locations, although not every local file operation or Trash workflow is available through every provider.

Use Home

Home brings together four kinds of entry point:

Spaces: Open Explorer for hierarchical browsing, Gallery for images and videos, or Documents for document-oriented browsing.
Recently Used: Reopen up to six files you opened recently, or clear the locally stored history.
Pins: Add frequently used folders, drag them into your preferred order, open them directly, or remove them from Home.
Storage: Enter the device’s internal storage.

The navigation drawer provides access to Home, Trash, Settings, and About.

Browse and view files

Tap a folder to enter it and use the breadcrumbs to move back through its parents. Tap a file to open it in a supported viewer; media can open in treeger’s viewing flow, while other formats may be handed to a compatible installed app.

The Browse options sheet lets you switch Space, choose List or Grid, and sort by name, modification date, size, or type. Folder-specific view choices are remembered. Image files can show thumbnails; folders and other files use stable fallback artwork.

Use Settings > Show hidden files when you want folder listings to include hidden items and dotfiles.

Find files

Search starts in the location you are browsing. In Explorer, you can search only the current folder, include subfolders, or search internal storage. Filters can narrow results by file type, modification period, or size, and Documents can expose more specific document-format filters.

Search is performed on demand rather than through a permanent content index. A large recursive search can therefore take time, and an unavailable folder may be reported without discarding results already found elsewhere.

Manage files and folders

Long-press an item to begin selection, then select more visible items as needed. Available actions depend on the selection and storage location, and include:

Select all, share selected files, and view properties when one item is selected.
Create a folder and rename an item.
Copy or move files and folders, browse for a destination, review the carried selection, and resolve name conflicts explicitly.
Cancel an active transfer; longer transfers continue through Android’s background-work mechanism and show an ongoing notification.
Delete supported local items by moving them to treeger’s Trash.

treeger does not silently overwrite an existing destination. When a conflict occurs, choose the offered resolution before the operation continues.

Recover or permanently delete items

Deleting supported local files or folders moves them into treeger’s app-managed Trash and offers an immediate Undo action. Open Trash from the navigation drawer to restore items, permanently delete selected items, or empty Trash.

If the original destination already contains the same name, restoration asks whether to keep both, replace the destination, or cancel. Trash is not a shared Android trash service, and locations exposed through document providers may not support it.

In Settings, choose whether trashed items expire after 7, 30, or 90 days, or are retained indefinitely. Shortening the retention period requires confirmation before already-expired items are permanently deleted.

Adjust appearance and behavior

Settings currently provides:

Canopy and Bloom visual identities. Android controls whether the app uses its light or dark colors.
A switch for hidden files.
Trash retention.
