Treeger Refinements - Closed Testing And Feature Polish

Closed-testing feedback and proposed follow-up refinements for Treeger's Home, Spaces, Gallery, navigation, and About screens.

This page records a feedback snapshot. Some items have since been implemented or superseded; it is not a description of current user-visible behavior.

This document shared some issues or ux refinements to be implemented after the standard file manager and spaces feature implementation. Over the course of several features, we have accumulated few UI/UX and functional issues and we aim to resolve them as part of Play Store closed testing.

UI/UX

Home

  • Spaces, Pinned and Quick Access are occupying one folder per row. I think two columns per row is a better utilisation of spacing and if more number of folders, it doesn’t need too much of scrolling.

  • Space entry has folder icon, title and subtitles. I don’t think we need subtitle at all. The default spaces are self descriptive and any custom in future are named by the user.

  • Given that we are having three default spaces which covers majority of the content, I am not sure if we need Quick Access at all. In fact Quick Access can be renamed to Storage, and just show Device Storage. In future, we can add things like, SD Card, Google Drive, etc.

  • I want Pinned to be renamed as Pins to be consistent with other sections.

  • The ordering of Pins is not user friendly is the feedback obtained in the closed testing. Probably because of the dotted icon used. May be we should use up-down arrow icon we typically get the react array component. the animation of press and drag is also not as smooth as enhanced as the web version.

  • When using an Operation Shelf, you have to click Done manually to close the operation and I don’t think that’s necessary when done is the only option available. Show it for 3-5 seconds and then auto close. Also rename Done to Close.

  • I feel like the size of folders used in grid mode in explorer is asbig as images and I don’t think it needed. If space allos I would like to.show same metadata information we thought of doing in home screen pins,

Space Screen

  • [Share Decision] The top bar is crowded with title, pin icon, search, sort, view mode, and space switcher. Titles slightly longer than 5-6 characters are getting wrapped in two lines. Not evening need to be shown always. Since we have a concept of folder memory, view mode and sort once set are remembered so they can go under a three-dotted menu. Both of these are multi option options. So would a three dotted menu would be with nested drop-down or should we have a modal for these remains to be seen.

  • Pin icon also need not be directly available and can go into dotted menu. We are not expecting users to go to a folder and then pin it. Rather use + icon from Home and then browse through the explorer.

  • The space switcher drop-down uses purple tint as background which seems to be from default android without any relation to the theme palette.

  • In general, for folders I think we should show directly nested folders, directly nested files, created date, and the storage size of the folder. If showing text like file, folder is too long we can explore icons for them. In Explorer mode it is always one folder per row unlike the Home page as there is a other poc coming that needs 1 per row concept.

  • When showing images in the explorer space, I think we should apply the meta data styling followed in gallery except for the name. we can still show name but type, size can be overlay on the image..

  • When clicking to open adoc files, it shows a long list of apps and most of them got duplicate duplicates atleast 2- 3 times.

  • When adding a new pin, the tick mark is not immediately clear that it’s for pinning. So I think we can add a button at the top with pin icon to indicate that click on there to ling the current folder

  • Slightly bigger item, and not exactly a refinement but rather enhancement. Thanks gallery scans everytime we open the app fresh. We need to explore ways to do this incrementally and ways to do it faster for the first time for large libraries. If we do this, we can remove refresh icon entirely.

  • When using Operation Shelf in content browser mode, after selecting an operation, we have choose the folder. The only way now is switch the space to explorer and the browse through the folders. I think we should directly provide a button named Browse in the Operation Shelf itself possibly above the cancel button. In the hierarchy mode, it might be redundant but shouldn’t be an issue.

  • Can we show dynamically derive type list as filter in Documents space? Should SpaceHost or Space definition need any changes to achieve this?

  • The styling of Group titles that are based on the sort are different between explorer and gallery. gallery looks okay.

Navigation

  • Trash, Settings, and About menu items are as of now children of home and I can’t switch directly to other from one of these and have to go via home. That should be changed and all menu items have to be at the same level. Navigation Stack of Home is independent of others.

  • Clicking on a image from recently used opens inside gallery which is expected. Clicking on back, takes to gallery with the location of that image as filter. I think that’s weird. Shouldn’t I be going to the Home page again?

  • Compare that to opening an image from an explorer. Clicking back arrow or back swipe takes me to the exact explorer state without any changes and this is the correct behaviour.
