asciitor 1.4 Release Notes
Autosave, a focused document workspace, synchronized editing and preview, syntax highlighting, and HTML export in asciitor 1.4.
asciitor 1.4 makes everyday document work safer and more fluid, from the first edit through saving, previewing, and export.
Highlights
Safer document editing
-
Existing writable documents are saved automatically two seconds after the latest edit and when asciitor leaves the foreground with unsaved changes.
-
Autosave and manual save share the same persistence and recovery path, including one retry for transient provider failures and clearer guidance when the destination cannot be written.
-
The unsaved-change indicator remains visible until persistence is confirmed.
-
New documents use their first level-one heading as the app bar title and first-save filename suggestion, while preserving the saved filename after that first save.
-
The editor keeps the cursor and active line visible when the on-screen keyboard opens or changes size.
A streamlined document workspace
-
A compact document toolbar replaces separate Edit and Preview tabs with one mode action and provides direct Save, Export, and Focus mode actions.
-
Focus mode hides normal app chrome and Android system bars while keeping the document toolbar available for uninterrupted reading or editing.
-
Android Back exits Focus mode before closing the document.
-
A content swipe can open the navigation drawer on non-document screens and while editing; the gesture is disabled in Preview so vertical WebView scrolling remains reliable.
Synchronized editing and preview
-
Switching to Preview opens near the block corresponding to the edit cursor.
-
Returning to Edit restores the source position nearest the visible preview content.
-
AsciiDoc and Markdown syntax is highlighted directly in Edit mode without changing stored text, cursor positions, selections, or accessibility text.
-
Plain-text files remain unstyled, and highlighting is skipped for unusually large documents to keep editing responsive.
PDF and HTML export
-
Export now offers PDF and HTML from one format chooser.
-
PDF continues through Android’s print flow.
-
HTML export creates static, already-rendered output using the active Preview theme, colours, typography settings, selected Preview font, and code font.
-
Exported HTML does not require the Asciidoctor runtime. Embedded, web, and relative image references are preserved as authored.
More reliable document navigation and Recents
-
Back returns externally launched documents to the originating file manager or app instead of navigating to the asciitor home screen.
-
Documents opened through asciitor’s picker continue to populate Recently Opened, while externally launched documents with temporary permissions are not stored as unreliable Recent entries.
-
Recent entries whose documents were definitely moved or deleted now show a clear message and are removed automatically without treating temporary provider failures as stale files.
Google Play "What’s new"
Version 1.4 adds autosave for existing documents, a compact Save and Export toolbar, Focus mode, source syntax highlighting, and synchronized Edit and Preview positions. Export PDF or styled static HTML, derive first-save names from document titles, keep the cursor visible above the keyboard, and handle stale Recents and externally opened files more reliably.
