asciitor 1.5 Refinements

Plain-text compatibility, format-aware preview, and editor refinements delivered in asciitor 1.5.

This page records the Version 1.5 scope delivered after the Version 1.4 document workspace refinements. See Version 1.5 release notes for the user-facing summary.

Plain-text documents first

asciitor should edit human-readable plain-text files, including UTF-8 and UTF-16 documents. AsciiDoc remains a first-class authoring format, with preview and export powered by Asciidoctor.

Use MIME type and filename as hints, then inspect selected content before fully loading it. Accept UTF-8, UTF-16, and ASCII-compatible text; reject binary-looking streams. Apply that policy to the Open picker, external Open-with launches, and write-access re-selection.

Format-aware document experience

Use one shared format registry to drive MIME and extension hints, syntax styling, preview availability, export availability, and product wording.

Format family Preview Initial behavior

AsciiDoc (.adoc, .asciidoc, .asc)

Rendered

Preserve the existing Asciidoctor reader, position sync, PDF printing, and static HTML export.

Markdown (.md, .markdown)

CommonMark with selected GitHub Flavored Markdown extensions

Render Markdown independently from Asciidoctor, including tables, task lists, strikethrough, and autolinks.

HTML (.html, .htm, text/html)

Rendered

Preview static HTML in a separate locked-down WebView, with document JavaScript and local/content-file access disabled.

SVG (.svg, image/svg+xml)

Rendered

Preview vector artwork through a separate safe rendering path.

Plain text, JSON, CSV, XML, YAML, TOML, configuration, and source-code files

None

Present one native Edit mode with Save and Focus. Do not show Preview or offer Asciidoctor-derived export.

Calendar, contact, PDF, office, archive, and other files that need a domain-specific reader remain out of scope. JSON, CSV, XML, and code can gain specialized views later as separate features.

Source syntax assistance remains deferred

The existing native editor styling for AsciiDoc and Markdown remains unchanged. Syntax parsing and highlighting for the wider plain-text family are not part of this refinement.

Unknown text remains readable and editable without syntax colors.

Product language

Use wording such as: "A local editor for plain-text files, with Asciidoctor-powered AsciiDoc preview and export." Update current product copy, picker guidance, UX mocks, and future screenshots when the behavior ships. Historical release notes remain historical records.
